have you guys read "tuesdays with morrie"? it was also one of my favorite. when i had finished reading it, i cried. grabe, i was deeply touched & inspired with morrie's story. its about the summary of life. i strongly suggest that you read it, maikli lang sya, wala pang one week tapos mo na sya. plus i love quoting the lines. saka may movie version pa sya na produce ni oprah. yun lang po, share ko lang. :)

I agree with len the international bestseller book Tuesdays with Morrie- an old man , a young man and life's greatest lesson . I've seen the movie 1st and after that i read the book. I t discuss different aspect of life which are life itself, death, failure, regrets, learning, family, work/career, aging, forgiveness, love and peace. You Don't need to be like Morrie at the age of 77 to go in this process --- they are many Morrie and Mitch in surrounding nowadays.

---SOME OF THE THOUGHTS DIALOG AND LINES FROM THE BOOK AND MOVIE TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE:

What's wrong with being number 2 (value of achieveing as well as contentment)

What it is in silence that ppol feel uncomfortable (value of silence perse, spirituality )

Dying is just 1thing to be sad apart living unhappy is just another matter

Aging lives that haven't found meaning

( LIVING lives the way we want it)

How can you spares someone's feeling by denying it ?
( value of listening to one's self feelings)

We're afraid of getting love bacause we're afraid of giving it to someone we might lose
(love and rejection)

Work, money, ambitions,we bury ourselves with these things but we never stand back and say is this what i want?
(happiness)

i WOULD NEVER do work ,that used ppol that hurt them, that degrated them. I won't make money on the sweat of others (justice)

Tension of opposites ... what u want to do versus what u have to do (reality)

There is nothing to be shameful of being dependent (others)

We must love one another or die . Once u learn how to die u learn how to live.
(appreciation of life )
We learn from what hurt us as much as what love us
(value formation)

so this is some of the things that u can see & a lot more once u have the book. It will cost u only 250-360 the price and U can buy at ANY national bookstore, goodwillbookstore & powerbooks!!!! in case u don't have it buy it!!!
GODSPEED !!!!!

book well if i were to choose i'll recomend to read the book entitled "The Art of War" or any book about Communism try to study the priciples kahit Bawal sa Philippines you'll will realise how the Philippines made a great mistake in choosing such form of Government. of course as communistic priciple mention, there's no freedom, but look what happened to china? isn't it they have a stable economy, political and social life? yes i know what happened to the Tianamen Square Masacre.... so what? those people did not think that by sacrificing your wealth/freedom will surely make not only their country stable but also for them. all we need is just a brave citizen like Master Deng Xiao Pig to make the Market as what my Political Science Book says by Doreen Jackson _"China enjoys both private and government owned market/corporation."

Another book for enhancing and preserving our long term memory, read some Encyclopedias.

04.12.21, 12:34 PM
Hmmm...I wouldn't attribute China's economic stability (as you mentioned) to their being a "Communist" country. I mean, they aren't communist now, right? I don't even think any country achieved the "communist" status. Nobody achieved communism's very essence, "UTOPIA." Socialism isn't communism either. China shifted when "communism" wasn't really working for them. It failed. Communism creates this political scenario wherein "the powers that be" are given enormous power. With this setup, it is very conducive to being abused. Once it is abused, everything will go down the drain.

I don't believe in a system controlled by fear and violence. People naturally strive for their rights and once these basic rights are stepped on, expect them to fight for them.

Though I would also suggest people to read "The Art of War," originally of Sun Tzu but recently adapted(?) by James Clavell, I wouldn't recommend it for the reason you cited. You'll learn a lot about warfare and the things stated there aren't limited to literal interpretation. You could use them in other aspects, such as marketing, or anything as long as there is "competition."

Just my two cents. :)

Boeingman
04.12.22, 05:27 AM
hmmm... sure? i think its still communist and sa pagkakaalam ko may pagbabago lang ng mga principle ni Mao Zedong today China experencing a communistic principle of Deng Xiao Ping kaya nga may Private Business na... but still i have to respect your opinion and by the way thats what my Dad told me... kagagaling lang nya ng China last week... and still he can see ciommunistic attitudes of the people...

hashpipe
04.12.22, 02:59 PM
The facts that China decentralized the economic controls of the government, gave importance to private businesses and amended (just recently) their constitution to PROTECT property owners, refute the idea that they are *still* a communist country, if they ever became one. Communism asserts that the state should own all the factors of production. So China couldn't be a communist country. It would just be too darn conflicting. :)

Though I do understand why people still treat it as a communist country. The Communist Party of China is running the government and they use authoritarian methods for control. However, they are breaking the principles of communism. Would you still consider them as a communist country? It's like saying you are a pacifist but then you engage in wars and fights. Total opposite, and totally crazy too. So what I'm really trying to say is that, China can't be exactly pinned down as a Communist country, especially when their actions negate everything and anything communist. :)

;DGlad that someone mentioned Sun Tzu's Art of War is the oldest military classic known to Chinese literature. It was written more than 2,300 years ago. It is also the most revered and well-known military text outside China. It was a requirement during my 1st year college to read this book. Well its worth to buy this book it discuss if you are looking for a few words of wisdom that will change your very outlook on the world, then Sun Tzu's The Art of War is the solution. In this tome of knowledge, Master Sun, the leader of an imperialist faction, explains the finer points of combat. Master Sun does not map out specific plans of attack but conveys the philosophy behind the creation of such plans. This book is a "must read," for after several readings, the true greatness can be seen. When The Art of War is taken for more than its militaristic facade, one can gain the ultimate prize - wisdom :D

By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept - Paulo Coelho

"By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept" is another novel by Coelho that proves that love is not an obstacle to materializing one's dreams, but a force urging the lovers to conquer their dreams and thus find God. Coelho has once again used his successful formula when writing this novel: poetic prose, symbolism, an air of mysticism, and his usual "follow your dream" theme.

Just like "The Alchemist", "By the river Piedra... " is a story about a journey symbolizing the route towards self-discovery. "By the river Piedra... ", however, could more easily be described as a story of love, as it strives to show that "true love is an act of total surrender". At a deeper level, Coelho also gives the message that as there are no rules when it comes to love, there are no rules when it comes to worshiping God: "to love is to be in communion with the other, and to discover in that other the spark of God".

In this best-selling novel Coelho talks about a long-forgotten aspect of God: His feminine side, the so-called "Goddess". The feminine face of God has been, as Coelho explains, present in every religion on the face of the earth: paganism (Great Mother), the ancient fertility goddess, Isis, the Virgin Mary. This Goddess, presented as generator of all life, is present in the love the two main characters feel for each other. It is as if Her presence haunts their relationship. The monk turned Goddess-worshiper at first thinks he's faced with the dilemma of staying with the woman he loves and abandoning the life that fulfils him, or venturing on his planned mission to change the world. In the end he discovers that a choice need not be made: to love a woman is to love life itself.

The love between the couple is one that develops, and it goes through many levels: the childhood love, love hidden behind the bars of inhibition and oppressed feeling when they reunite, the liberated love whereby Pilar regains her "faith" and changes her philosophy on life, and whereby her lover decides to deny his nature and sacrifice his "gift" to have a normal life with Pilar, and the enlightened love which allows both lovers to conquer their dreams.

Just like fear of failure prevented some people from achieving greatness in "The Alchemist", fear of rejection prevented the lovers from expressing their love in "By the river Piedra... " The expulsion of this fear is vividly symbolized with the deliberate breaking of a glass at a restaurant. This gesture shows that to surrender to love we must break through our fears and break all the rules and formulae. Also, to convert to the faith of the Goddess, which is seen as heresy by many, one must see beyond everything one's parents taught one about religion and the limits of life.

When the glass is broken and the two lovers are liberated from all inhibition comes the kiss, the description of which is an excellent example of Coelho's poetic style: "a kiss born by the rivers of our childhood when we didn't yet know what love meant... in the moment of that kiss were years of searching, disillusionment and impossible dreams".

At an age when everything has been discovered, Coelho suggests that there are greater discoveries to be made: those of the spirit. The two lovers have made the discovery that all people can speak the language of angels and perform miracles. Now their mission is to let the whole world know, "and experience the agony and ecstasy of pioneers".

"By the river Piedra... " is an enjoyable love story that may also be seen as a metaphysical allegory. It is a characteristic sample of Coelho's writing, and some questions are raised by the paradox of Coelho urging people not to use formulae in their lives and yet he once again uses the formula that gave him his best-selling status. Nevertheless, this novel, like all the novels he has written, is a delightful read which gives the reader a sense of much-needed faith in humankind.

"The Third Secret" by Steve Berry. Kakatapos ko lang nung isang araw. Very entertaining read. Makes me want to read his other stuff. A little Da Vinci Code-ish in the sense na historical fact ang backbone nung plot. In this case--if it's not obvious from the title of the book--it's about the Secrets revealed at Fatima in 1917. Mejo may pagka-controversial din so keep in mind that it's a work of FICTION when reading it.

hmm..u got a point there, but sometimes novelizations tend to stray away from their original stories to give it a fresh new perpective...DC Comics really need that storyline (Crisis) to clean up their always messed up timeline...case in point, their recently timeline-changing storyline..ZERO HOUR..where a psychopathic former Green Lantern virtually restarts the whole DC universe, thereby changing the dates of all their character's first appearances!

If you well knew that it wasn't a rumor, then you shouldn't have stated it that way. With your question kasi na, "is it true...", it would be more likely perceived as an UNSURE information, hence, more likely a rumor.

is it true that Bo sanchez is a recovering sex addict?hmmm...dat makes him more human than any preachers i've heard before..marami nagkalat jan na nagmamalinis e..at least si Bo..he's well, human enuf to admit his weaknessess...i like him.

yes spitfire, he is a recovering sex addict.. read his book "Your past does not define your Future".. this book was written using blood (as he said in his book)... personal testimony and action plan

as spitfire said: His revelation made me respect him even more (actually, 4 years na ako with the community he founded, and I know that for a fact, kasi lagi nya namang sinasabi yun sa mga teachings nya).

If you're interested to read the whole story buy the Book in all leading Bokstore nationwide (worldwide??).. or sa AFP theater every first sunday.

NiknokL nang-aano ka ha:, check it out na lang.. :D

reading palang ung mga articles ni Bo Sanchez sa Kerygma e, tingnan ko lang pag di ka tamaan...kahit paulit-ulit kong basahin ung mga articles nya hindi nakakasawa...what i like about his articles is that it is full of love and humor without missing his central point...i wish we have more preachers like him..not some holier-than-thou religious preachers throwing about malicious accusations to each other sa T.V.

Correct... agree ako diyan... marami kasi sa mga "preachers" e nagtatago lang sa image nila... mas gusto ko nga yung SINNER to SAINT kesa SAINT to SINNER type na preacher kasi nakakapag witness talaga siya ng transformation :)

I agree, mas gus2 ko na me pinanggalingan na "kabahuan." Kse they know what they're talking about, they've been there and done that. Or literally as the joke would say "been there, been that."

What ticks me off is that it is not because they are enlightened, but because they are naive. How can a rich person simply assert to a poor desperate person that it is wrong to steal, when the former has never experienced the urgency of starvation... moreso if their FAMILY is starving.

Pero a REAL person with REAL issues talking about it makes it more plausible for all us struggling humans. That it IS possible to change because one who has been exactly like you has done it.

spitfire
05.07.11, 06:02 PM
you both hit the nail right...Bo's not trying to be very preachy or trying to promote catholicism in a radical way..ayoko na mag-accuse sa ibang religions but certainly the way Bo preaches malayong-malayo sa kanila...just watch ung isang "religious" program sa NET 25..it's pretty lame that they bashed one another on national T.V. no less...very unchristian don't you think?

:'(Goodness!!!do i have to read all those books para hindi ba me mawala sa continuity? ??? i mean, stand alone story ba ung bawat books nun and u don't have to refer to the other books in the series? i wish meron ding crossover between HP characters and LOTR characters..ung may team-up sila against a common foe...imagine HP fighting alongside Gandalf and company? ;Do kaya mag-eenrol si Frodo sa Hogwarts ;D ::)

It's a SERIES. Of course there's continuity between books. It's not a bad thing. think of it this way, you have 6 books all ready to be read. Think of those who started from book 1 and had to wait 1 year each for 2 and 3, then 2 years each for 4, 5 and 6. Ikaw, --if you get into it that is--only have to wait for book 7.

As for the crossover, very BAD idea IMO. LOTR movies were good, but the books are excruciatingly boring. I actually threw ROTK across the room in frustration one time.

spitfire,

i agree with kuya arjay.. it's a series. kung ayaw mong mawala sa continuity the answer is simple: read the books ;)

but if you're not into it (obviously) and just going along sa flow....i suggest you "seek" for other books na ending agad. try the grinch or something. lahat ng books nun e di related sa isat' isa.

******

niknok,

the prices differ from one another. but last time i checked sa bookstore, they were selling the "softbound" ones for P399.

you can check online for the prices if you want to...

hi jeffoy. i have a hard copy of the sixth Harry Potter Book and I must say that it has bumped off Prisoner of Azkaban as my favorite HP book. I don't want to mention any of the details here so I won't spoil your fun. But suffice it is to say that you simply cannot put it down. Don't stop until you're done reading! Make sure you don't miss every single word.

It's a great mixture of humor, wit, sentimentality, tears, adventure and sadness. JK Rowling is really in her element here.

Read it na. :)

i have been bitten by the e-book downloading bug. ;D i've been able to download the books of ray bradbury. my interest in his books was triggered by an excerpt of his story (Dandelion Wine) published in Reader's Digest years ago. I remember how the words seemed to take a life of its own when I started reading.

Yay! ;D Nabasa ko na yung Da Vinci Code at Digital Fortress ni Dan Brown ^_^ I like the latter kasi gusto ko yung male protagonist na linguist, asteeg ang skills nya ^_^ Sana ako din ganun. Some friends of mine told me that they've lost, somewhat, their Catholic faith due to the former. Ako, work of fiction. I also watched yung National Geographic special regarding the book, and it did prove that Mary Magdalene is indeed close to Jesus.

:D Thanks po in advance *hugs* ;)

Just read this in the Inquirer today [April 01]: "12 Things Every Filipino Can Do To Help Our Country." :nice:

I think this is the book that should be read by every Filipino right now, whether abroad or here in our motherland. Time to stop pointing fingers and re-examine what being a true Filipino is all about. :)

Hello... makikisali uli...

I am currently reading "Jesus" by Fr. Henri Nouwen. The book is splendid. Fr. Nouwen offers new and refreshing insights to the Gospels. I read one meditation every day. Highly recommended.

I also like "The Prophet" by Khalil Gibran. Beautiful, beautiful words! Pero ingat lang kasi Gibran has some pantheistic themes, like dun sa answer niya sa question on prayer.

"The Art of War" - If you know yourself and the enemy, you need not fear the result of a hundred [or thousand, not so sure anymore]. Recommended... for those who like competition, even with their own selves.

On Paulo Coelho, I read "The Alchemist", "By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept", "Veronika Decides to Die", "11 Minutes", and "The Fifth Mountain." I have also read "Maktub", his compilation of short stories. I find it hard to really pinpoint the driving philosophy of this man until I've read "20 [or something, I forgot] Compelling Evidences that God Exists" [recommended din 'to]. This book discussed on different world views. I would classify Coelho's philosophy as panentheism. This is the world view which espouses that God is in all and all is in God... Very romantic, but panentheism is not entirely Christian. Maybe the panentheist in Coelho made him imbibe such concepts as 'the soul of the world', 'the language of the world', etc... Despite this, I would recommend still a reading of "The Alchemist".

I have also read "Sophie's World" by Jostein Gaarder. Nice work, although not really for kids. :) Recommended for lovers of philosophy like me.

I have also read Philip Yancey's "Finding God in Unexpected Places" and "Disappointment with God." Highly recommended!!!

My all time favorite "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery is also highly recommended. Required reading ito sa Philo 101 namin during college.

"The Prayer of Jabez" is also highly recommended along with "The Purpose Driven Life".

I am about to start reading the refuted book "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell. Next time ulit...

actually ilang tuesdays (96-144 tuesdays na yata, hehe) nang nasa bookshelf ko yung tuesdays with morrie kaya lang ngayon ko lang sya inumpisahang basahin, sobrang busy e*. so far, maganda. nasa middle pa lang pero i could perfectly relate to it. for the past years i've been out of the country, i made a lot of realizations. i found myself talking to my family and friends about the value of time, family, friends, soul, and mostly everything about life and suddenly i found a perfect description of what i was talking about, rolled into one book. i recommend this to people who are searching for something in their lives - happiness probably. and if you don't realize that you were searching for something, after reading this book, you'll know that you are and you'll understand more about life. and just like what anya said, we don't need to be 70+ years old to realize and do such things.

I recently finished reading EXORCISM: Encounters with the Paranormal and the Occult by Fr. Syquia.

It was an eye-opener to say the least...brilliant in the light of our Catholic faith, why people should be careful of New Age practices like tarot card reading, spirit of the glass/ballpen, contacting the 'dead', spirit quests with non-Christian people (for the sake of education, thrill-seeking), fortune telling, going to mambabarangs, etc.

I highly recommend the book.

(PS: di ko ina-advertise ang Shepherd's Voice, but it really is a very educational book on one's Faith).

If you want to be blessed, read the books of Bo Sanchez... He is a very good lay preacher.... I watch his daily reality show in www.preacherinbluejeans. doon ako kumukuha ng food for my soul everyday....

Marami kang matututuhan.... Ilan sa mga nabasa ko ay The Pilgrimage, 11 Minutes, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept, at The Alchemist na kasalukuyan kong binabasa.

Tuesdays with Morrie...

The Little Prince ni St Exupery.... Kwentong pambata na para sa matatanda....

Charlotte's Web ni E.B. White...

Bata Bata Paano Ka Ginawa
Dekada '70

Parables of the Barrio na tinipon ni Juan Flavier (Juan Flavier? Oo!

Let us promote the culture of Reading sa kabataan...

Little Flowers of St. Francis of Assisi by Brother Ugolino

In this book are contained certain Little Flowers - to wit, miracles and pious examples of the glorious servant of Christ St Francis, and of some of his holy companions.

The saint imitated the example of Christ as literally as it was in him to do so; barefoot, and in absolute poverty, he proclaimed the reign of love.

Next to the Bible, is not "Our Daily Bread" but "The Imitation of Christ" by Thomas A. Kempis, The Most Widely Read Spiritual Work of All Time. Also sometimes called the "Following of Christ"

For more than five centuries, The Imitation of Christ has been acclaimed by people of every faith and belief as one of the greatest spiritual writings of all time. Next to the Bible, probably no other work has been so widely read nor has had such influence. Through periods of peace and war, pestilence and plague, panic and depression, good times and evil, The Imitation has provided inspiration and food for spiritual strength and consolation for people of every creed.

I suggest The Bible. Best book ever. Not only spiritual, but historical as well.

Any books by the following authors will be suffice to add to our wisdom as well :

Paulo Coelho
John C. Maxwell
Jostein Gaarder
Don Miguel Ruiz
Bo Sanchez
Og Mandino
English Classics

Specific books (additional)
The Kite Runner
The Traveler's Gift
Chicken Soup for the Soul

Magazines:
Reader's Digest
Time Magazine
National Geographic
Newsweek

:)

Let's also not forget to read the works of Luwalhati Bautista.
