Hi! I'm just new here. I'm the head of the Music Ministry of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gatchalian II, Las Pinas. We actually do research for the readings of each Sunday or special occasion. You can check them out at:

http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Of course it is more helpful to also rely on the misallettes as the more specific themes/explanations are specified.

Then I have list of possible songs that correspond to the readings and psalms. That one is applicable for the processional songs (Entrance, Preparation of Gifts, Communion, Recessional). We also call these the Mass Proper songs.

Meanwhile, there are what you call the Mass Ordinary songs, that are actually the congregation's responses during the mass, that are sung. Examples, Kyrie, Gloria, Gospel Acclamation, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, etc. These songs do not correspond to the readings for the day, but you can choose several compositions around. In our parish, we have a combination of choices from Filipino and foreign composers.

The key though to ensure that the congregation of your parish get familiarized with these songs, and thus be able to participate actively in the singing would be:

1) Make sure the Mass Ordinary songs are sung for an extended period of time (do not change lineup always).

2) Make sure that all your choirs sing the same Mass Ordinary sets of songs.

Let me know if you need further help! God bless!

For this month, yung Recessional namin is "Ang Puso Ko'y Nagpupuri". Before that (before Final Blessing), pinapakanta sa amin ang "Salve Regina". For the Offertory, you may find it unacceptable, but we do sing "Aba Ginoong Maria". Sa Communion, "Stella Maris", "Mariang Ina Ko", and "Inay" yung mga kinanta namin. Marian songs yung pinapakanta usually kapag May eh.

Hi Guys,

Question lng po. Can "Tinapay ng Buhay" be sang as an offertory or a communion song? Corpus Christi kasi sa Sunday and its one of the most compatible songs I know. Pero we sing this as an offertory song.

Any thoughts guys? Thanks! :)

titopao

@kasparov: Please see the "Tinapay ng Buhay" thread in the "Liturgical Songs Discussions" forums. There's an interesting discussion/debate about the same question :) I can't give a definite answer as there are convincing arguments for both positions (i.e. offertory or communion)?

Alex,

Hint, from 17th to 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time ay 6th Chapter of John ang ebanghelyo, kaya kadalasan ng theme ay sa Bread of Life.

The reading on 17th Sunday in Ordinary time is taken from the Gospel of St Mark 6:1-15 The multiplication of the 5 Loaves and 2 Fish. Then after the people ate, they've collected 12 baskets of leftovers.

You can read more in my post here para sa mga liturgical notes from the SUMMIT (http://www.bukaspalad.com/board/showpost.php?p=89514&postcount=22)

Hi erron, Is it for the month of June or the month of July? Medyo na-confuse ata ako dun hehe... :P Anyways, Kuya alex has posted a scanned copy of the SUMMIT. This is the misallette they are using in Australia that contains all the readings for the month... Meron ding mga suggested songs that you could sing (tama po ba kuya alex?)... Although you could only view them if you're a regular member... You can read the rules and guidelines on how to become one... Also, Just keep updated on the threads for additional information. Not only here but on other threads as well... There are a lot of onliners that have pretty good insights on what to and not to sing...

You can find the copies here:

15th Sunday in Ordinary Times (12 July 2009)
Matthew 6:7-13; "He called to twelve and began to send them out..."

Sa list of songs doon, siguro ang pinaka familiar ay "Here I am Lord"

Friends, suggestions nyo nman for communion songs for the Sundays of September. Below are the gospel readings. :)

September 6, 2009

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel - Awit ng paghilom
Mk 7:31-37

Again Jesus left the district of Tyre
and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,
into the district of the Decapolis.
And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment
and begged him to lay his hand on him.
He took him off by himself away from the crowd.
He put his finger into the man’s ears
and, spitting, touched his tongue;
then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,
“Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” —
And immediately the man’s ears were opened,
his speech impediment was removed,
and he spoke plainly.
He ordered them not to tell anyone.
But the more he ordered them not to,
the more they proclaimed it.
They were exceedingly astonished and they said,
“He has done all things well.
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

September 13, 2009

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel
Mk 8:27-35

Jesus and his disciples set out
for the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
Along the way he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that I am?”
They said in reply,
“John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others one of the prophets.”
And he asked them,
“But who do you say that I am?”
Peter said to him in reply,
“You are the Christ.”
Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.

He began to teach them
that the Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed, and rise after three days.
He spoke this openly.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them,
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake
and that of the gospel will save it.”

September 20, 2009

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 134

Gospel
Mk 9:30-37

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee,
but he did not wish anyone to know about it.
He was teaching his disciples and telling them,
“The Son of Man is to be handed over to men
and they will kill him,
and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.”
But they did not understand the saying,
and they were afraid to question him.

They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house,
he began to ask them,
“What were you arguing about on the way?”
But they remained silent.
They had been discussing among themselves on the way
who was the greatest.
Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them,
“If anyone wishes to be first,
he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”
Taking a child, he placed it in the their midst,
and putting his arms around it, he said to them,
“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me;
and whoever receives me,
receives not me but the One who sent me.”

September 27, 2009

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel
Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48

At that time, John said to Jesus,
"Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,
and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us."
Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him.
There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name
who can at the same time speak ill of me.
For whoever is not against us is for us.
Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink
because you belong to Christ,
amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.

"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,
it would be better for him if a great millstone
were put around his neck
and he were thrown into the sea.
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed
than with two hands to go into Gehenna,
into the unquenchable fire.
And if your foot causes you to sin, cut if off.
It is better for you to enter into life crippled
than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna.
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.
Better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye
than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna,
where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'"

@casper: Yes, pupwedeng communion song.

Panalangin sa Pagiging Bukas Palad is the Prayer of Generosity by St Ignacius of Loyola. Kaya naman paboritong gawing offertory song ito para kasi maantig ang mga tao to give generously sa collection pero other than that, wala talagang kinalaman ito sa offertory, kaya tulad ng nasabi nila, maari itong communion song.

Pakitignan ninyo itong website ng National Association of Pastoral Musicians sa US.

http://www.npm.org/Planning/yearb/index.html

Baka tayo ganahang lalong magsikap upang maging kasing galing nila at lampas pa.

Hi peeps.. Suggest naman kayo ng magandang reflection for the Gospel tomorrow. Sa parish kasi namin, lagi may post communion song na reflective of the Gospel.. Eto po yung gospel reading:

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him,
"Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."
He replied, "What do you wish me to do for you?"
They answered him, "Grant that in your glory
we may sit one at your right and the other at your left."
Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the cup that I drink
or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
They said to him, "We can."
Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink, you will drink,
and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared."
When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John.
Jesus summoned them and said to them,
"You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles
lord it over them,
and their great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.
For the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Nov. 1 is the Solemnity of All Saints. Dahil isa siyang mahalagang celebration, pinalitan ang naka-assign na readings for that Sunday into the readings for All Saints. Eto ang planong line up namin. Though marami ring iba na pwede, since the Gospel refers to the Beatitudes.

bakit po kaya hindi na lang gumawa ang Catholic Church ng isang line-up na kakantahin for the Masses, kahit sana dyan sa Philippines magkaroon ng centralized line-up, yan po ung dapat isa-suggest ko noon sa diocese namin, or kahit na sa vicariate level magkaroon ng centralized line-up, or dapat magkaroon ng music ministry per vicariate para napapagusapan ung line-up..para kahit saan ka magsimba iisa lang ang naririnig mong kanta.. even the responses dapat pare-pareho..

cybernard
09.10.29, 05:16 AM

Di na tayo matutong mag discern ng songs appropriate for each service

marami talagang pros and cons if we will have one line up, let's say mapulitika talaga, un ngang different choir on one parish hindi minsan nagkakasundo sa isang line-up for that week, ano pa kaya kung buong bansa, BUT if there will be a body na magaayos nito, and communicate it pababa sa mga parishes i think magiging possible to, let us just be open minded, kasi sa totoo lang dapat hindi basta-basta kung sino lang ang nagla-line-up ng mga kanta sa misa, hindi ung kung ano lang yung feel nating kanta yun na lang, dapat we DISCERN it, MASS is the highest form of worship and singing is the highest form of prayer, i know mahirap kung gagawin agad to on a national level, why do it first on vicariate level, and let see what happen

JANUARY 1, SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD (A, B, C) Lectionary #18

“Theotokos,” translated as “God-bearer” or “Mother of God,” is one of the most important titles given to Mary. It is also important in clarifying the Church's belief that Jesus did not simply “become” God; he was divine from his conception. So this feast, which appears to be a feast of Mary, is actually a further clarification of the meaning of Christmas.

Numbers 6:22-27. To be able to name God and to use the divine name suggested an intimate connection between God and the people. The same is true for those who call themselves "Christians."

Psalm of the Day: Ps (66) 67. This hymn of praise echoes phrases from the "blessing of Aaron" in the first reading; it calls on all the nations to praise God, who rules the whole world with justice.

Galatians 4:4-7. Because we are united to Christ, we can address God as "Abba," the title that Jesus seemed to prefer to use. In fact, because Christ's spirit lives in us, we are children of God.

Luke 2:16-21. Most of this text is a reprise of the Gospel reading for Christmas Mass at Dawn, which connects this feast to Christmas. It continues with the account of Jesus' circumcision and his naming. "Jesus" is the Greek version of "Joshua," which means "liberator" or "savior."

This Sunday marks the formal end of our Christmas season. Jesus’ public life comes next, and his baptism begins it.

Christmas season has been over for a week now, but the Church has good sense and lets us celebrate the event for a number of weeks after it happens, instead of just ripping down decorations and going on to the next thing. Good for the Church.

In the Gospel we hear the voice of God the Father speaking to Jesus. This only happens twice in the Gospels, and both times it is the same message.

“You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.”

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C Lectionary #72

Accepting God's call may mean confronting those who do not live according to the ways of peace and justice. Jeremiah discovered this, so did Jesus.

Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19. The call of Jeremiah is a summons to “stand up and tell them all that I command you.” But it is also a promise that God will provide the backbone that Jeremiah needs for this mission.

Psalm of the Day: Ps (70) 71. A prayer of hope and confidence.

My Lips Will Tell of Your Justice PSL 105/SS

1 Corinthians 12:31–13:13. The greatest of these is love.

Luke 4:21-30. Jesus elaborates on the statement of his mission (see last Sunday) and introduces himself as a prophet. His announcement is not received well.

Hi and welcome sa BP Online Community! Please don't forget to read through our rules and regulations for guidance. You'll find some useful links in my signature.

Not really for Sunday, but I'd be glad if someone can share their lineup for Ash Wednesday.

What would be appropriate for distribution of ashes? Can we sing any song meant for Ordinary Sunday?

@Maloy: I think any song that you would have used for the ordinary Sundays of Lent would do, so as long as they meet the guidelines for songs during the Lenten Season :)

This weekend the readings' theme is about serving God through serving your fellow man, i.e., neighbor.

Offertory: wala pa akong alam na offertory song na may linyang service to fellow man.

Communion: Jesus na aking kapatid. Pero pwede din ang kantang Dakilang pag-ibig dahil with emphasis on the line kaya't buong pag-ibig rin nating mahalin ang bawat kapatid at kapwa.

Recessional: Pananagutan.

I think basta yung song is tungkol sa pagmamahal sa Diyos sa pamamagitan ng pagmamahal sa kapwa, swak na swak yung song.

JR Medina
10.07.08, 10:59 AM
I hope this helps you too!

July 11 (15th Sunday in OT)
Theme: Serving God through serving fellow men
Entrance: Alay sa Kapwa or Buklod ng Pag-ibig (both by Father Honti)
Offertory: Alay-Kapwa (by Rolando Tinio-Fr Honti)
Communion: Jesus na aking kapatid or Dakilang Pag-ibig
Recessional: Pananagutan

July 18 (16th Sunday in OT)
I think it would be more practical for this weekend to base it on the readings rather than a general theme kasi very specific yung Gospel (about Jesus' visit to Mary, Martha & Lazarus' home)
Entrance: Purihi't Pasalamatan (kasi 1st Reading is Gen 18:1-10)
Offertory: "Father, I adore you, lay my life before you... ndi ko alam title nito, pero again it invokes the Trinity
Communion: At Home in our Hearts (kasi this song is inspired by Saint Marta).

Recessional: Ang Puso ko'y Nagpupuri (stanza 7 only) kasi 1st reading is Gen 18:1-10)

Thanks!

Walang anuman!

July 25, 17th Sunday in OT (Year C)

Ito yung Sunday na ang Gospel ay tungkol sa "Teach us to pray" tapos Jesus teaches the apostles the Lord's Prayer, and then after yung famous na "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find..."

Tapos Fil-Mission Sunday pa.

So Maganda n swak kung ang mga songs na kakantahen ay merong mga ganitong elemento: teaching prayer, prayer itself, some degree of bravery, a little bit of fear or uncertainty, and trust in God.

E: Dinggin mo
O: Sumasamo Kami
C: Sa 'Yong Piling, Patnubay, Pananalig, H'wag Mangamba, or Huwag kang Mangamba
R: Pari Magpakailanman

Too bad we can't sing the Ama Namin itself for any of those parts of the Mass hehehe. Yun ang swak na swak!

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Pansin ko ang mga themes ng readings are being a chosen people, nobody knows the final hour, being prepared, faith, being a faithful servant.

English Mass: E: Seek the Lord

? ko lang. Does this mean po na kapag Marian feast, halimbawa Aug 15 Assumption papatak sa isang Sunday, and also Aug 22 Queenship of Mary, pwedeng Marian songs ang Entrance, Offertory, Communion and Recessional?

I just don't want to commit a booboo para sa line-up for Aug 15 and 22.

Any suggestion po para sa 22nd August 2010
21st Sunday in Ordinary Times - Year C
http://www.usccb.org/nab/082210.shtml

Gospel Jesus passed through towns and villages,
teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem.
Someone asked him,
"Lord, will only a few people be saved?"
He answered them,
"Strive to enter through the narrow gate,
for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter
but will not be strong enough.
After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying,
‘Lord, open the door for us.’
He will say to you in reply,
‘I do not know where you are from.
And you will say,
‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’
Then he will say to you,
‘I do not know where you are from.
Depart from me, all you evildoers!’
And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth
when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
and all the prophets in the kingdom of God
and you yourselves cast out.
And people will come from the east and the west
and from the north and the south
and will recline at table in the kingdom of God.
For behold, some are last who will be first,
and some are first who will be last."

Di ko alam kung saan ako magpo-focus e.... kung sa Narrow Door or yung sa last part ng Gospel :)

Help naman po....

Meron din akong nakitang 2004 and 2007 explanation sa 21st Sunday - Year C pero di ko pa ma-absorb e :D

15 August 2010, Solemnity of the Assumption of the BVM

Dito sa diocese sa gawing amin dinidiscourage ang paggamit ng Marian song other than in the recessional part, kahet pa may occasion na Marian feast. Kasi daw po the Mass is Christo-centric.

But Assumption falling on a Sunday is a rare occasion d ba. kaya naging maingat me na di masyadong halata na Marian siya, yun bang ndi masyado obvious.

E: Magnificat (Canon) from Nabuhay si Kristo (Taize)
P of the G: Unang Alay
C: Magnificat (David Haas or in Stand by Me still)
R: Hail Holy Queen enthroned above...

I just don't want to commit a booboo para sa line-up for Aug 15 and 22.

The Assumption of Mary is a solemnity that, this year, falls on a Sunday of the Oridinary Season so the Church will celebrate it even if it is a Sunday. But the Queenship of Mary is only a memorial, not a solemnity. so we will not celebrate the Queenship of Mary on Aug 22.

Pwedeng Marian SOngs sa Entrance, Offertory, Communion and Recessional? Pwedeng pwede sa recessional. on other parts, however, depende sa Diocese or sa Parish.

Kahit naman hindi Marian Feast pwedeng kumanta ng Marian songs sa recessional, especially if your parish is under the patronage of Mother Mary.

If we are not singing Marian Hymns sa Aug 15, ano ang communion song nyo this soming Sunday? I think we can sing naman songs based on the Magnificat.

JR Medina
10.08.10, 08:49 AM
Yun nga din. Tama. After some tanung-tanong sa mga tao and research last week, In our diocese, but not in our parish, dinidiscourage ang Marian songs at any part of the Mass other than the recessional, because daw po that "the Mass is Christo-centric or God-centric."--whether Marian feast or not.

August 15, 2010: Solemnity of the Assumption

E: Magnificat (Canon) from Nabuhay si Kristo/Taize
P of the G: Unang Alay or Take and receive
C: Magnificat (by David Haas) Himig Heswita in Stand by me still
R: Hail Holy Queen enthroned above

Alexander
10.08.11, 03:54 PM
The Solemnity of the Assumption of BVM is a proper feast. Most Parishes or Diocese would have dispensation to use Marian songs sa Mass as some of them consider this as Votive Mass.

Pero fine print is .... always ask.... kaya sabi ko "Most Parishes or Diocese..." ;)

Note: This is one of the rare occasion that the Pope invoke the Papal Infallability and this solemnity is a Church Dogma

Note: By promulgating (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12454b.htm) the Bull (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03052b.htm) Munificentissimus Deus, 1 November, 1950, Pope Pius XII declared infallibly (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07790a.htm) that the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was a dogma (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05089a.htm) of the Catholic (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03449a.htm) Faith (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05752c.htm). Likewise, the Second Vatican Council taught in the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium that "the Immaculate Virgin (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15464b.htm), preserved free from all stain of original sin (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11312a.htm), was taken up body and soul (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14153a.htm) into heavenly (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07170a.htm) glory (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06585a.htm), when her earthly life (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09238c.htm) was over, and exalted by the Lord (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08374c.htm) as Queen over all things (n. 59)."

Additional Note:

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated every year on August 15, is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. It commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a holy day of obligation (http://catholicism.about.com/od/holydaysandholidays/a/2010_Lit_Cal.htm).

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time-Year C

E: Halina at Lumapit (Ruben Habito) good match for 2nd Reading, Hebrews 12

P of the G: Unang Alay (Appropriate on absolutely any Mass.)

C: Hesus na aking kapatid (with emphasis on ...sa taong mapagkumbaba)

or Pagsibol (Pero I'm having 2nd thoughts sa kantang toh dahil ndi ko maintindihan kung bakit may linyang IPAHINTULOT MONG AKO'Y MAPAHANDUSAY SA SUMASA-IBAYONG KAGINHAWAHAN ... like, allow me to live a prosperous life, parang slightly contra sa Gospel. Still, it seems it goes well with the Responsorial Psalm (Poon, biyaya Mo'y ibigay sa mahirap naming buhay)

R: Kapag Marian ang Parish name or you will observe the feast: Salve Regina or Hail Holy Queen Enthroned (non-obligatory) memorial of the Queenship of Mary

Otherwise: Saan kami tutungo. Pero pwede din ang common na Pananagutan (OK yon kung yung Gospel will include that part about inviting the sick and the poor to your parties).

Sa amin po kasi, sometimes yung short version lang ng Gospel ang nababasa, lalo na kapag medyo 2 parables-in 1 Gospel (like Aug 22). Sometimes there's a good possibility na yung part lang ng humble party guest ang mababasa, and yung part na inviting the poor to your parties is not read.

Whew ang haba napagod ako. Sori po kung mahaba.

or Ang Mabuhay sa Pag-ibig

R: Humayo Tayo, Hail Holy Queen Enthroned, or Salve Regina

Aug 29
E: Sa Hapag ng Panginoon (related to the humble guest at the party)
P of the G: Unang Alay
C: Jesus na aking kapatid (emphasis on sa taong mapagkumbaba)
